aircraft taking off
Pigeons are by most peoples’ definition a pest or at least a complete nuisance no matter where they are, these are very social birds and have a tendency to flock together in large numbers and with the noise, the guano deposits, old nesting material and of course the dead birds that are always around a pigeon roost, they make quite a mess.

Pigeon protection for Heathrow Airport

However, pigeons can prove to be hazardous in the wrong area and that was why we were called into Heathrow Airport to prevent a colony of pigeons roosting on a building that was adjacent to the Northern Runway. The pigeons had made themselves a home in a roof top structure that houses a large cold water feed tank, there was also a heating and ventilation compound next to this where the machinery created voids and the birds had gotten underneath some of the machinery and trunking where they had begun nesting as well. Given the size of the area, this had the potential to allow the already sizable flock to expand in numbers and present a greater hazard to aircraft that were taking off and landing just metres away.

Pigeon netting gives all round protection to a site

Bird strikes are a real and valid threat to aircraft, particularly when coming into land, taking off and taxiing around the airport – birds and planes just don’t mix, in fact according to collected evidence these flight phases account for 91% of bird strikes, so you can see that the flock had to go.
We don’t kill or harm the birds, that would be unnecessary and counter productive as with an empty roost site of this quality, more pigeons would move in straight away. Instead, we focus on the key methods of creating exclusion, installing roosting denial and cleaning up the mess to leave the site a safe place to work in afterwards.

We use high quality netting to create a barrier across openings and access points and in the case of the roof top compound we used steel poles to create a frame and enclosed the entire structure in netting, keeping the birds out for good. Preventing the birds from landing on part of the structure is also important as the birds are very attached to a roost and will remain on site during the day even though they may have found someplace else to roost overnight.

Guano cleaning and rubbish removal at Heathrow Airport

On top of this work, we also had several years of bird presence to clean up in the form of guano and dead birds; pigeons are infested with bloodsucking mites and these kill many of the older weaker birds which means, just like at Heathrow, there are bird carcases in different degrees of decay lying around the site.

When an area has had a pigeon infestation, the site becomes hazardous to health due to the amount of bacteria, fungus and viruses that live in this rich organic waste matter and heating and ventilation contractors cannot be allowed to work in conditions like this, so we clear up all the mess, sanitise the area and remove the waste from site.
